Wondering what's in store during your next tire installation? This guide explains how the installation process works, so you know what to expect when you get your tires installed at Mavis.

Mavis tire installation services

Our technicians follow carefully honed processes to ensure correct tire installation. In addition, every Mavis technician completes our thorough Mavis Proper Tire Installation Certification Program, which includes training on all makes and models and periodic retraining.

What is proper tire installation (PTI)?

Proper tire installation (PTI) is our process for ensuring you get the most from your tires. With any new tire or set of tires, we carefully calibrate your wheel balance, properly torque your lug nuts, and use our protective equipment to ensure your wheels look as good as they came in.

How it works: The Mavis tire installation process

The technicians at Mavis follow a standard set of installation steps when replacing one or more tires for our customers.

First, once your vehicle is securely on our lift, we remove your current tires and wheels from your vehicle. Next, your old tires are taken off your wheels and disposed of properly.

Next, our technicians will check the health of your wheel’s components, including your lug nuts and valve stems. If they are damaged or worn, we may recommend replacement lug nuts or valve stems to ensure you get the most from your investment.

Tire mounting comes next. In this step, we’ll take your new tires and mount them to your wheels, then inflate them to the proper specification recommended by your manufacturer. Once mounted, we’ll use our high-speed wheel balancer to balance them properly, adding wheel weights as needed.

Once balanced, we put your tires and wheels back onto your vehicle, and all the lug nuts get torqued to manufacturer specifications. If necessary, we will recalibrate your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors to the proper locations on the vehicle.

High-speed wheel balance

Mavis Discount Tire locations use computerized, high-speed balancers during a tire installation to ensure you have a smooth and comfortable ride. Wheel balancing is a crucial part of the new tire installation process to account for small manufacturing differences in the tires themselves that may throw off the overall balance of the wheel assembly. We regularly maintain our machines to ensure they properly calibrate your wheels.

Torque

During a tire installation, we tighten your lug nuts, specially designed fasteners that hold your wheel onto your axle. We check your specific vehicle's specifications to ensure a correct fit and torque. This helps ensure that your lug nuts are not over or under-tightened, which can cause vibrations or wheel failure.

Wheel protection

We know your car's appearance is important, and we work hard to ensure your vehicle is in the best hands with Mavis. Our tire mounting equipment locks onto your rims and uses specially designed plastic-coated arms to help prevent unsightly scratches and other damage.

Tire Installation

Mavis wheel alignment services

Whether you're installing new tires or maintaining existing ones, the experts at Mavis can help keep your wheels in proper alignment. We believe in preventing tire wear from the first installation, including regular tire rotations and alignments.

Why is wheel alignment important?

Performing regular alignments or alignment checks is critical to extending the life of your tires. Wheel alignments that are improper or out of specification can cause early or excessive tread wear. Conversely, a proper wheel alignment on your vehicle keeps you going straight down the road and maximizes the longevity of your tires by ensuring they wear evenly.

Mavis can install your new tires quickly and safely

At Mavis, our highly skilled and professionally trained technicians have the knowledge and proper equipment to install your new tires quickly and correctly. From professional mounting and high-speed balancing to proper lug nut torque application, we'll ensure your new set of tires has you riding comfortably for many miles and adventures.

Tire installation FAQ

Tire installation prices can vary by geographic region, tire size, and vehicle. You can trust that Mavis will mount your new tires properly and quickly for a great price. Be sure to check our site regularly for tire promotions and special offers, including rebates on tire purchases and discount service coupons!

Mounting and balancing a set of four tires typically takes between an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the vehicle. However, if the tires are already mounted and balanced, simply installing tires can be as quick as 20 minutes!

We know that you're busy, so we offer an after-hours dropoff service and appointment scheduling that's convenient for you.

It is possible to mount your own tire, but it can be tough to do and requires specialized tools to prevent damage to your wheels, tires, and TPMS sensors. Removing the old tire can be  equally tricky and potentially dangerous. Balancing a tire is also difficult to do without the correct tools, and on modern vehicles, proper lug nut torque is crucial to the safety of your car.

Yes! The team at Mavis will mount tires that you already have, including those purchased elsewhere or ones that you may have stored for seasonal use. Before installation, we'll check them to ensure they are the correct size for your vehicle and confirm there are no leaks or weather cracks that may affect your vehicle's performance.

A tire stored out of the elements will last longer than one stored in the elements. Vehicles with spare tires tend to have them mounted in different places, from in the trunk to under a truck bed. Finding enough space to keep your spare tire inside the car is the best way to store a spare tire.

In some ways, there is no difference because a donut tire is considered a spare tire.

However, a donut tire is intended to only be a temporary spare tire, with a decreased top speed recommendation (usually indicated on the rim or sidewall), and is not designed to replace a regular or full-size spare tire permanently.

A true spare tire would be a complete wheel and tire identical to the other four tires already on your wheels.

Buying a tire from Mavis and having one of our professionally trained tire technicians mount your tire ensures it is done properly. Our technicians go the extra mile to use wheel protection to hold the wheel in place without damaging the finish, as well as properly torquing your lug nuts to factory-recommended specifications after installation.

You don't need to buy tools, struggle with your wheels, and get your hands dirty. Leave all that to us.

Our high-speed balancing service also ensures that any vibrations caused by manufacturing differences in the tires are accounted for and corrected, so you can enjoy a smooth ride.

No, we do not offer installation services for tractor tires. We sell a wide range of tractor tires but do not provide installation as part of our services.

Our focus is on providing high-quality tractor tires at competitive prices. When purchasing tractor tires for self-installation, it's essential to consider factors such as tire size, tread pattern, and compatibility with your tractor model. Our team can assist you in selecting the right tires for your needs. We recommend referring to your tractor's user manual for specific instructions on tire installation.
